The April tour was a grand success both artistically with great reviews, and commercially with packed houses. Hosts of friends showed up and the band played up a storm. Special thanks to Bil Kolhaase for the huge and perceptive piece in the LA Times.
Bud's Workshop and Festival are fully booked for the end of July, and in addition to faculty will feature singer Freddy Cole, flutist Holly Hoffman with Bill Cunliffe, Carl Fontana and Jiggs Whigham, the Benny Green/Christian McBride Band, and the Festival Allstar Big Band under the direction of Maria Schneider. Meanwhile, Bud is hard at work assembling the materials for a new CD in the works. It will feature the music of the late Gerry Mulligan. A recording date is pending discussions with a major US label. The most difficult part is choosing between all the marvelous songs Gerry wrote in the later part of his career.
Performance note: Bud will be performing with his quartet (Mike Wofford, Bud Magnusson, and Joe LaBarbera) and Conte Candoli at the Athenaeum in La Jolla on November 22 and will record a "Club Date" for PBS the following day. Bud will be spending most of October and November '98 in Europe touring (Germany, Holland, and England scheduled so far).
