JANUARY 1998

Welcome to the "new look" of Budnotes. We are starting the year with a new computer, and in addition to this new format, we are in the process of creating Bud's web page, a herculean effort when it is not being done by a pro! The few months taken off have paid off very well, with the catalogue done, the music selected for the Bud Shank songbook, several chapters of the autobiography taped and transcribed, and the discography and recordings databases complete at last. Now it is time to get back to the bandstand. Bud has no less than THREE CDs in the planning stages, and currently his two latest CDs are both riding high in the charts and getting excellent reviews. Especial thanks to Fantasy Records for their strong promotional support for "By Request." This CD garnered two Top 5 pics for 1997 by JazzTimes magazine critics.

1998 is wall to wall performances after a slow January/February start. Bud is using those months to complete planning for his July Workshop and Festival and to lay out and arrange the material for the upcoming CDs, plus practise those awful long tones. Then in April, there is a tour that includes Reno, Palm Springs, Carmel, Los Angeles, and San Jose, with a CD recording possibly in the middle of that somewhere. Two weeks later, Bud leaves for the East Coast for stints at several venues now being firmed up.

Best news of all is that Michael Cuscuna at Mosaic has chosen to put out a boxed set of much of Bud's work from the 1950s, a total of seven re-releases, with Doug Ramsey doing the liner notes. It is a real honor for Bud and he is thrilled. He just hopes it won't make people think he is dead!! Far from it -- this will be one of the most busy touring years on record.
